In the midst of this winter, let’s look at transaction counts on Bitcoin and Ethereum since their inception.
Summary:
In 2022, there were 93M transactions on Bitcoin and 408M transactions on Ethereum
This means there are ~4X the number of transactions on Ethereum v. Bitcoin
In 2021, there were 98M transactions on Bitcoin (down 5% from 2021-2022) and 462M transaction on Ethereum (down 12%)
5 years ago in 2018, there were 81M transactions on Bitcoin (up 14% from 2018-2022) and 251M transaction on Ethereum (up 63%)
Interestingly, the mainstream hype cycle seems to lag Bitcoin (i.e. Bitcoin transactions peaked in 2019 - 120M, then 2020 - 112M, then 2021 - 98M) while peak hype was 2021
The hype-cycle matches Ethereum wherein Ethereum’s peak transactions peaked in 2021 at 462M transactions
